Minton Discontinued China Gallery

Minton China Gallery

Minton was founded in 1793 by Thomas Minton, in partnership with Joseph Poulson, and with the financial backing of William Pownall. It initially traded as Minton and Poulson producing predominantly transfer printed earthenware dinner and tea services. In 1836 Thomas's son Herbert took over and he continued to build on his fathers success, attracting many renowned potters and designers to come and work for the pottery. The most noticable of these potters being Leon Arnoux who was appointed art director in 1849.

Minton continued to grow and whilst the earthenware lines were discontinued after the outbreak of World Ware II in 1939, the company's bone china production for the domestic market continued throughout the war period, and when the wartime restrictions were lifted, demand increased dramatically. By this time Minton had established themselves as producers of extremely high quality bone china tableware.

They became part of the Royal Doulton Group in 1968, but production did not cease at the Minton Works until 1992, when the work was taken on by other factories within the group. The Minton backstamp continues to be used to this day.

The objective of this gallery is to display photographs of the many discontinued designs from the Minton Pottery. These designs will include retired tableware, collectibles and giftware. We hope that this will serve as a useful point of reference for those people trying to identify their retired Minton dinner sets, tea services and collectables.
